Dear Souk,
Love all your recommendations. I have ordered so many things, especially from the food section, and they have all been amazing.
Can you also build a list of some cool magazines for adults, both in India and international? I miss the whole 90s magazine era. I saw you recommend Pulp, but are there more in the adult section?
Regards,
V
We received this lovely email back in January and made a note to keep a lookout for fun magazines, only to realise we already knew the perfect folk to help V out!
Welcome to Community Recommends, a Souk series where we ask fellow enthusiasts to share the things they love—books, objects, places, ideas. The goal is simple: instead of algorithms or bestseller lists, we turn to our community for discovery.
For this third edition, LURU, an independent Bengaluru-based magazine and creative studio (who’ve just launched their 4th issue!), recommends 9 cool magazines—both Indian and international, across food, art, interiors, lifestyle, and more—for those who miss the 90s magazine era:
| |
HOME & LIVING 01 PlatformPlatform magazine's ability to document contemporary Indian creative culture with depth, warmth, and accessibility makes it especially compelling, particularly in the way it brings together art, design, fashion, and independent practices in a manner that feels rooted yet current. |
|
HOME & LIVING 02 NotebookWhat stands out here for the streaming service's print publication is the thoughtful approach to cinema writing and criticism, where film becomes a lens to discuss memory, politics, aesthetics, and culture beyond the screen itself (pun very much intended). |
|
| |
HOME & LIVING 03 MargFew publications hold the kind for its archival richness and long-standing contribution to documenting Indian art, architecture, craft, and cultural history with such academic rigour and visual care. |
|
HOME & LIVING 04 DhoopDhoop invites its audience to its intimate and contemporary exploration of South Asian identity, everyday life, and storytelling through a visually delightful editorial language. |
|
| |
HOME & LIVING 05 SafarThis bilingual publication transforms urban history and research into engaging, accessible narratives that deepen the relationship between people and the cities they inhabit on an annual basis. |
|
HOME & LIVING 06 ApartamentoRather than presenting interiors as overly curated spaces, Apartamento approaches domestic life in an unpolished and deeply human way that values personality, lived experience, and emotional texture. |
|
| |
HOME & LIVING 07 KinfolkIts influence on shaping a slower, intentional visual culture around lifestyle publishing is significant, especially through its emphasis on simplicity, community, ritual, and design-conscious storytelling. |
|
HOME & LIVING 08 Emergence MagazineWhat makes Emergence remarkable is the way it weaves together ecology, spirituality, sound, literature, and visual storytelling to create immersive narratives about our relationship with the natural world. |
|
| |
HOME & LIVING 09 The GentlewomanThe publication consistently portrays fabulous women with intelligence, individuality, and nuance, balancing fashion with deeply personal and culturally relevant conversations. |
