An award-winning artisanal whey cheese from India that tastes like a salted caramel milk fudge.
We first recommended this cheese in our very first Secret Santa gift guide, and it came to our notice again recently when we heard it had won a Bronze at the 2025 World Cheese Awards. (It won the Super Gold in 2023, and made history by becoming the first-ever Indian cheese to win a Silver on the world stage in 2021). Originating in Norway, Brunost, or brown cheese, is created by heating leftover cheesemaking whey until the milk sugars caramelize and the whey reaches a fudge-like consistency. Its texture is reminiscent of the ubiquitous Indian milk sweet ‘Peda’ and each block of Eleftheria's Brunost cheese is embossed with the initials of the company's name in Devanagari script just as artisans do with ‘Peda’—a detail we particularly love!
We are driven by curiosity, and a deep love for product, and are committed to transparency. We scour the internet to find products we love—from brands we trust. We look for things that stand out for their distinctive design, quality and mindfulness. We recommend these finds on the Souk website and in our newsletters—and tell you exactly why we like them. Like any friend would do.
If you're new to this, here's the deal — when you buy something through a link on Souk, we may earn a percentage of the sale, but it is at no extra cost to you. This allows us to remain independent and focused on curating only what we genuinely love. Any ad or sponsored post will be clearly labelled as such — there are no secret product placements on Souk! Each time you use our links to buy something, it supports our team's hard work as your trusted shopping buddy.
